How ratings work
England, Wales and Northern Ireland
Ratings run from 5 (very good) to 0 (urgent improvement necessary). The inspector scores three areas, and the overall rating comes from all three:
Hygienic food handlingHow food is prepared, cooked, reheated, cooled and stored.
Cleanliness and condition of facilities and buildingCleanliness, repair, layout, ventilation, handwashing facilities and pest control.
Management of food safetyWhether the business has a system, records and trained staff to keep food safe between inspections.
Tap a finding on a place's page to see this again. A low rating means things need to improve, not that the food will make you ill: a business that is an immediate risk to health would be closed, not rated.
Scotland
Scotland uses its own scheme. Pass means the business met the legal requirements for food hygiene when inspected; Improvement required means it did not. It isn't on the 0 to 5 scale, so it has its own colours.
Everywhere
A rating shows how a business was doing on the day it was inspected: hygiene, the state of the premises and how food safety is managed. It is not a guide to how good the food is. Ratings change after each inspection, so check the date. Awaiting means not yet inspected; Exempt means the business doesn't need a rating.
